Orthodontic treatment throughout the teenage years is proven to achieve some of the best results in the most efficient timeframe and is the age when the majority of orthodontic cases are performed. This is because the adult teeth have newly erupted allowing them to be effectively moulded into their prime position.

At Mountains Orthodontics we have extensive experience and use the latest in technology with both metal or ceramic braces & Invisalign.

Our orthodontist will carefully assess the patient & recommend the most effective & efficient treatment option, to suit their individual needs.

Ceramic braces are the perfect option for patients who desire a straighter smile but are concerned with how braces will affect their appearance and presentation. Ceramic braces work the same as their metal counterparts, but utilise ceramic brackets instead of metal ones. They are an excellent alternative for patients who are more aesthetically conscious but are not a candidate for clear aligners such as Invisalign.

Made of polycrystalline alumina aesthetic braces not only blend with the natural colour of your teeth but are also more comfortable on your lips and cheeks. Moreover, clear braces won’t stain or discolour throughout your treatment, so your smile will remain looking natural throughout your treatment.

At Mountains Orthodontics, we specialise in the latest technology using self-ligating braces which are more comfortable, efficient, minimise food traps and makes oral hygiene easier to maintain throughout treatment.

Rather than the small, coloured elastic modules, traditionally used to hold the wire in place, self-ligating braces utilise a door that is built into the bracket. This produces a sliding mechanism that allows the wire to move more freely inside the braces with less friction. The result is a more hygienic treatment experience and efficient results.

Using clear, removable aligners as opposed to braces, is a great option for patients who are concerned with how braces might affect their lifestyle or appearance. Invisalign works through a series of aligners that are designed to gently guide the teeth into their optimal positions, while they are worn for 22 hours per day. Invisalign aligners are removed for eating & brushing, therefore has little to no impact on what foods you eat or oral hygiene maintenance. Our orthodontist are Invisalign Platinum providers, which means they are highly experienced in working with this product, thoroughly assessing the dental landscape and ensuring they provide the most predictable & desirable outcome.

Caring for your braces

To ensure that your braces have the maximum impact and achieve your goal of a straight & healthy smile, please follow the guidelines and instructions given to you at the time your braces are placed. Regular brushing, flossing and avoiding hard, sticky or chewy foods will help to keep your braces & oral hygiene at its best. We also encourage regular check up & clean appointments with your dentist or oral health therapist throughout your orthodontic treatment. If you follow these instructions, wear your elastics and attend your regular appointments you’re treatment should finish on time with excellent results.

How they feel

Following the braces initial placement patients may experience short term pressure and some possible tenderness in the teeth. A non-prescription pain medication can be taken to control this initial discomfort, like Panadol. Eating softer foods and cutting food into smaller pieces is recommended for the first week as your mouth adjusts. The braces may initially cause some irritation to the inside of your cheeks or lips which can be treated through an application of the orthodontic wax on the braces causing the discomfort. We also recommend rinsing with warm salt water, as this is very soothing, and cleansing for your mouth.

How long will my teen need braces?

The average treatment duration is 18-24 months. However, this can vary depending on the severity of the case and patient cooperation. To closely monitor treatment progress, regular appointments will be scheduled with our orthodontist approximately every 8-12 weeks.
